You might be asking what does a morning routine have to do with connection, well I’m here to tell you it has EVERYTHING to do with it!
There are so many benefits to having a morning routine – not least that it helps set our day up for success. A morning routine can help us remove at least a few decisions. I don’t know about you, but I find there are some days when I’ve reached peak decision fatigue by 10am.
Life can be overwhelming.
Apparently having a morning routine can help with that.
Steve Jobs used to ask himself every morning “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”, while looking in the mirror. If he said no on too many consecutive days then he made some changes. This was one of his morning rituals that helped set his mindset for the day ahead.
Benefits of a morning routine
Benefits of a morning routine are:
- It can help reduce stress
- It can save you time
- You’ll be more inclined to be healthy – especially if it includes exercise
- You’ll be more organised
Author and podcaster Tim Ferris says that having a morning routine can help you “win the day”. If you accomplish one good thing in your morning routine, you’ve accomplished one good thing for that day, and you’re much more likely to have a good rest of the day.
Mornings can also be the most predictable part of your day. For most of us, our mornings look like this – you get up, you do stuff, you go to work. For most of us, it’s a rare morning that doesn’t follow this order.
It makes sense to start the day with some sort of morning routine.
Back in 2015, I hosted a podcast called The Activity Pod with my friend Annette Jones. One of the questions we asked all our guests was “do you have a morning ritual or routine that sets you up for the day?”.
Almost every guest said yes.
When we asked our guests on the activity pod, the three most mentioned aspects of a morning routine were:
- writing morning pages or writing a journal
James Clear, in his excellent book Atomic Habits, tells us that when starting a new habit we need to set an implementation intention. This means we say
“I will [insert behaviour] at [insert time] in [location]”.
I’m setting myself a 30-day challenge to do this Monday – Friday for 30 days. I’ll start today and see how I go! I have a fair bit of travel this month, 2 x 6am flights (what was I thinking!) an 8am flight and 14 nights away.
